It is hard to believe that we have been in our new home for four
weeks! We are finally starting to feel settled and like we are “home” and not
just renting a condo for a week of vacation:)
This journey started back in November when we sold our townhome and (after looking at the very limited housing inventory) we decided to build. We picked a builder, a plan, a lot, signed some papers, wrote some checks and then we were told that our house would be ready about the middle of April. Yay!
This journey started back in November when we sold our townhome and (after looking at the very limited housing inventory) we decided to build. We picked a builder, a plan, a lot, signed some papers, wrote some checks and then we were told that our house would be ready about the middle of April. Yay!
Mike and I were super excited to be building our “1st”
family home! In the past 11+ years we have owned two other homes (a condo and a
townhome); this one will actually make our 3rd. Each home has been
special to us for different reasons. But I think this home will be extra
special because we built it for “the family.” We are now located in a very family
friendly neighborhood. We are in a community with great schools. And we finally
have a real yard (with grass and everything:) for the girls (and dog) to play.
Most of all, this home will be extra special because it will
be the first home the girls remember growing up.
Since this is our “1st” home and we are building
it from the ground up I wanted to do something special. Something that would put
our own stamp on the home and I am not talking about granite counter tops or
tiled showers. I wanted something with meaning, and then it came to me… let’s
do a “house blessing”. My parents did this when they were renovating their home
and I had seen a few people do this via Pinterest and I loved the idea.
The House Blessings that I have seen before have mostly consisted of people writing scripture, prayers, sayings etc. on the studs of the home. My original plan was
to pick one scripture for each area/room of the home. That would equal about 23
scriptures...completely doable! So I started my search for the perfect
scriptures for our home. I kept finding scripture after scripture after
scripture and before I knew it I had a list of over 100 of the most perfect and
amazing scriptures. WAIT. WHAT? I was now looking at a list of 100+ scriptures
that I had to narrow down to about 23. I started picking and choosing, and
slowly the list started to shrink but I had done all the editing I could do. It
is really hard to edit out the Word of God!!! The scriptures that remained on
the paper were just too perfect to dismiss. So I did a quick tally and I
realized I would now have to find a place in the house for the 80
scriptures that remained. Each scripture was then assigned to a specific room
and place in the home.
The next Saturday we grabbed several sharpies, loaded up the
family and headed to put our mark on what was soon to be the new Organ Family
home. We ended up writing half of the scriptures on that Saturday and came back
the following weekend to finish writing the others. I wanted this to be a pleasant
family experience and with two little ones I found it necessary to split our
memory making into two different days. After all we were writing close to 100
verses in the middle of winter…
(Prepare yourselves; this is going to be a long post.)
I have included a list of the 80+ scriptures we used throughout
the house along with a few pictures to document the day.

After we successfully covered this home in scripture, I took a moment to reflect on “what now”. So, I have picked these beautiful, meaningful and appropriate verses but they were soon going to be covered with drywall, tile, hardwood & carpet. Is that it? Will I have spent all this time searching for and writing these perfect verses, only for them to be forgotten once they are no longer able to be seen?
I didn’t want that to happen so I decided to set what seems
like a very unrealistic goal, especially at this moment in my life. I am
determined (to at least try) to memorize each scripture and the spot where it
is written in the home.
Now back to present time, four weeks in our new home and I
have not (yet) memorized a single verse that is written but it is definitely on
my to-do list! I am so happy we took the time to do this little “house
blessing.”
I want to end this post by saying how GRATEFUL we are to
have a roof over our heads, food on our table, love in our hearts and the
freedom to worship our God! And my prayer is that not only are we able to use
this home to nurture and grow our sweet little family but I pray we are also able
to use this home to BLESS others. Whether it be by opening the doors to others for meals,
providing someone a place to stay or by simply inviting our crazy life group
over for an evening of doing whatever it is that we do:)
