Once McKinley had experienced the many different flavors & textures of vegetables, it was time to introduce her to fruit. It should have been no surprise when M devoured any and every piece of fruit that touched her lips.
She definitely loves the more squishy fruits like banana, kiwi, & mango. She also enjoys apples & pears, but those take a little longer to eat. Her absolute favorite fruit is blueberries. She pops them in her mouth so fast we are starting to think she just swallows them whole.
Here are just a few photos of her eating her first fruits...
Day 18:

Now that I have finally blogged about Baby Led Weaning, here are some pictures of McKinley trying her first foods. We only gave veggies for the first 2 1/2 weeks. We had fun watching her explore different tastes & textures and seeing her many expressions. During this whole process, McKinley has tried everything we have put in front of her. There have only been a few times where she has taken only one or two bites of a certain food. Usually she eats everything in front of her and then wants seconds.
Day 1:
Hummus & Toast:
She loved the plain toast. However, the hummus was not a good food to try on day 1. What was I thinking!?! It did not just make her gag, it also made her throw up:( Needless to say, we have not tried hummus again...yet:)
Broccoli aka "Trees"
For the first few weeks this is what her tray looked like after dinner. This was an exploratory period, it was more about the taste & textures rather than the actual consumption.
Day 3:
Avocado
I just love this picture. It should be captioned "Oh no, what weird food am I getting tonight?!?"

This past Saturday, Mike and I woke up to a very snowy morning. Since I knew we would be hanging around the house for the for the first part of the day I decided I would make scones for breakfast.
I had seen this recipe for Cranberry Orange Scones on Barefoot Contessa and had been wanting to try it out. I was a little nervous about making homemade scones. I always thought they would be difficult to make and very time consuming. I was wrong! These were so simple to make and best of all they were so yummy!
Here is what they looked like straight out of the oven.
This is the final product. Once they were cooled, I glazed them with an orange juice & powdered sugar mixture.
This recipe made 16 scones total. I baked 8 of them and wrapped and froze the other 8 to bake at a later time. I am now on a mission to find other scone recipes to try. Mike has already requested strawberry scones & blueberry scones:)
Food Revolution
This past Sunday night I was flipping through the digital TV guide and I came across a show called Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. I had no idea what it was about, but it sounded interesting. I recorded it, but knew I wasn't going to have time to watch it until later in the week.
Monday I had time to write the post entitled "What Are We Really Putting in Our Bodies?", then on Tuesday I finally found time to sit down and watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Can we say spooky!!!
Within 1 minute of pushing play I realized that the blog post I uploaded the day before was exactly what the show was all about. Jamie Oliver, a renowned British chef, is on a mission to get people all over American to reconnect with their food and change the way they eat. One of his toughest challenges during the show is to change the food that is being served in schools.
The show doesn't actually start until this Friday night on ABC. At 7pm central time, they will replay the episode that was shown this past Sunday night and then at 8pm a new episode will air. The show will run on Friday nights at 8pm central, until April 23rd.
The 5 week series is set in the city that the Center for Disease Control deemed "the most obese city, in the most obese region, in the most obese country, in the world"... Huntington, West Virginia, also known as the unhealthiest city in America.
I was going to give you a summary of the first episode, but since they are re-airing the episode Friday night I will let you watch it for yourself. I strongly encourage you to watch this show. It will definitely get you thinking.

This past Monday Mike celebrated his 39th birthday. After he got home from work he opened his gifts and then we headed to eat. For dinner, Mike wanted to try one of the restaurants on our list of 31 locally owned restaurants. He chose to eat at Cafe Nonna which is a little Italian restaurant located in the Sylvan Park neighborhood. The salad and pasta was excellent! We weren't too impressed with the bread, but it's free, what can you say!?! Also, when I called it a "little Italian restaurant", I wasn't kidding. There are only about 10 tables so I would recommend making reservations. We will definitely we going back to Cafe Nonna.
